How Does PDF Merging Work?

PDF merging takes pages from separate files and combines them into a single document. Each page keeps its original dimensions, fonts, images, and layout. If one file is Letter-sized and another is A4, both page sizes appear in the merged output exactly as they were. No content gets resized, cropped, or re-encoded during the process.

Our merge tool reads each PDF into your browser’s memory using the pdf-lib JavaScript library. It copies pages sequentially from each source file into a new document, preserving all internal references, bookmarks, and embedded fonts. The result is a byte-for-byte faithful combination of your originals. For 10 files totaling 50 MB, the merge takes about 2-3 seconds on a modern laptop.

Situations where merging makes the most difference:

  • Combining a resume, cover letter, and references into one job application PDF
  • Bundling monthly invoices into a single quarterly file for accounting
  • Creating client packets with contracts, disclosures, and inspection reports
  • Assembling school projects from a title page, report body, and appendix
  • Merging scanned pages from a multi-pass scanner into one complete document

Cloud-based merge tools upload every file to a remote server. For a 5-file merge, that means 5 separate uploads plus a download. On a slow connection, the wait time adds up fast. Our browser-based approach processes everything locally, so the only bottleneck is your device speed. There is no file count paywall, no signup form, and no temporary copies sitting on infrastructure you do not control.

Before merging, it helps to fix any problems in the source files first. Use Rotate PDF to correct sideways scanned pages, Split PDF to extract only the pages you need, and Compress PDF on the final result if the merged file exceeds email size limits.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many PDFs can I merge at once?
You can merge up to 20 PDF files at once. Each file can be up to 200 MB. This keeps performance smooth in your browser while still handling large document collections.
Can I reorder files before merging?
Yes! Simply drag and drop the files in the order you want them to appear in the final document. You can rearrange them as many times as needed before clicking Merge.
Does merging affect the quality of my PDFs?
No. Pages are copied exactly as they are - no re-encoding, no resolution reduction, no quality loss. The merged document is a perfect combination of your originals.
Can I merge PDFs with different page sizes?
Yes. Each page retains its original dimensions. If your source PDFs have different page sizes (A4, Letter, etc.), the merged document will contain pages of varying sizes.
Is the file order preserved?
Yes. Files appear in the merged document in the exact order you arrange them in the list. The first file’s pages come first, followed by the second file’s pages, and so on.
